A second game of Doomed Pilgrim

See the first game.

I'm a warrior seeking peace and an end to bloodshed. I'm on a pilgrimage to the Temple to No Gods in the distant City of Gulls. My pilgrimage has brought me to the Ragged Forest, inhabited by a coven of infamous and evil witches. My goal is to pass safely through and continue my pilgrimage.

You, my friends online, play the world. Your goal is to see me to my doom, instead of safely on my way. You're allowed only to directly answer my direct questions, though, so you might not be able to do it.

The rules:
  1. Only answer my questions
  2. If you don't already know the answer, make something up
  3. Keep your answers short
  4. If your answer's disruptive, I'm allowed to delete it
  5. Otherwise, I have to go with the first answer somebody gives.
I have a long fire-blackened knife under my shirt and instincts honed by a life of violence. I have been walking through the Ragged Forest for only a day and as I have walked deeper the trees have woven ever more tightly together, until the ground before me is quite dark. I am sitting before a fire whose light does not reach beyond this small clearing, thinking of the past and those I have left behind. I stare into the flames and watch the dancing sparks.

Something warns me of approaching danger. What warns me? Anyone should answer.

(A suggestion - danger does not have to be quite so immediate as in the last game - we can build up to it with suspense).

  1. The fire suddenly, and without warning, goes out. You are plunged into darkness.

  2. Instinctively I dive and roll to the side, drawing my black knife as I go. I come up into a poised crouch, breathing quietly but deeply and ready to move. Then I falter - this again? I have run far to escape killing, but violence pursues me, is a part of me.
There is an eerie note of familiarity to this whole situation. What does this remind me of?

  3. This reminds you of the ambush that took your eye, less than a year ago.

  4. (Ouch! That will teach me to ask open-ended questions about my character)

Since then I have learned to rely more on my other senses, and to throw my knife less often. I listen carefully, acutely, straining to hear what is coming. I touch the floor with the palm of my empty right hand, feeling for subtle vibrations. I breath in deeply, trying to detect alien scents, different from the musty forest smells I have been smelling since yesterday evening.

    What do I sense?

  5. Nothing. In fact there is too much nothing. The sounds and smells of the forest have somehow faded away leaving only the sensations in your hand to remind you of where you are.

  6. By feel, I begin creeping my way cautiously away from the darkened fireplace, keeping my senses focused outwards. What two things do I learn from my senses about what is going on? Anyone should answer.

  7. You hear a humming or whining sound that is almost too high pitched for your ears to pick up. The resonance of the sound can be felt in the ground and the trees. You also learn that stinging nettles have begun to sprout where there were none before. A sudden sharp pain in your hand ongoing stinging sensation attest to that.

  8. I snatch my hand away from the nettles, blinking my one eye disbelievingly in the dark. Nettles sprouting out of nowhere? I'm not sure what I expected from the Ragged Forest but it wasn't this.

And that... noise. I'm not even sure if it's really there. Where does it seem to be coming from?
